Jan-Lennard Struff v Joao Sousa Head to Head
Their only previous meeting on the ATP circuit came at the 2014 Halle Open on grass and Sousa had delivered a straight-set win in that one. Other than that, they have also faced off in the 2017 Davis Cup where Struff had edged his opponent out in five sets, while Sousa won a Challenger final on the clays of Furth way back in 2011.

Struff Kick-Starts Clay Court Campaign
Having played 12 matches on indoor and outdoor hard court surfaces, Struff will feature in his first clay match of the season. And with the way things have gone all season for him, his confidence wouldn’t be soaring at the moment.
That’s because following on from a quarterfinal appearance at the Cincinnati Open and third round at the US Open last season, Struff’s performances have plateaued off drastically. He is 8-15 on win-loss since then and 2-5 over the last seven matches this season.
That includes opening round exits at the Australian Open, Montpellier Open and Rotterdam Open before he finally won a couple of matches in Dubai and Miami.
And while Struff is no mug on clay, having won three Challenger titles on the surface, he would have to turn things around drastically to get some results under his belt in the lead-up to the French Open.

Sousa’s Struggles Continue
If Struff would be worried about his form, things have been worse for Sousa. He started off his campaign this season on his favourite clay court surfaces, but lost in the first round of four successive tournaments.
This included a defeat at the Challenger level, and then losses at the Cordoba Open, Buenos Aires Open and Santiago Open, before he finally won one of the qualifier rounds of the Acapulco Open.
His maiden win in the main draw of a tournament came about a week ago in Miami where he edged out Chris O’Connell but a pummelling loss at the hands of Ugo Humbert in the second implies he has won just one main draw match since the Shanghai Masters of 2019.
It won’t be getting any easier against a player ranked in the top 50, who despite not being at his best, is still winning matches.
Struff v Sousa Prediction and Tip
These are two players struggling for form, two who would be looking hungrily for a win here and which is also why despite Struff starting out as a favourite we think this could be a fighting contest.
Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
