Millman Struggling in 2021
Following a successful 2020 season, which saw him claim his first ATP title, John Millman has had a woeful start to 2021.
The 31-year-old Australian is 1-6 from six tournaments and heads to Cagliari with a five-match losing streak.
The sixth seed, who won his first ATP title last November in Nur Sultan by beating France’s Adrian Mannarino in the final, got his only win of 2021 against Greece’s Michail Pervolarakis at the ATP Cup. He had begun the tournament with a straight sets defeat to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.
Since that win over the Greek player, Millman has lost to France’s Corentin Moutet (first round of Australian Open), Australia’s Matthew Ebden (Round of 16 of Singapore Open), another compatriot Alex de Minaur (Round of 32 in Rotterdam), Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili (Round of 32 in Doha) and Spain’s Bernabe Zapate Miralles (first round in Dubai).
It was against Moutet and Basilashvili that he was able to force a deciding set, otherwise he has been outplayed by his other opponents.
A three-time ATP finalist, Millman finished runner-up on clay in Budapest in 2018 and on the hard courts of Tokyo in 2019.
The 31-year-old right-hander, who has a career-high ranking of 33, had ended the 2020 season with an 18-13 record.

Coria is 4-3 on Clay in 2021
Facing Millman in the first round in Cagliari will be Argentina’s Federico Coria.
The 29-year-old, brother of former World No. 3 Guillermo Coria, Federico comes into the tournament with a 5-6 record in 2021, which includes a run to the semifinals of the Cordoba Open.
Starting the season at Melbourne-2, Coria won against Moldova’s Radu Albot in the first round but fell to America’s Taylor fritz in the next.
He was dumped out of the first round of the Australian Open by Canada’s Milos Raonic before making an impressive run to his first-ever ATP semifinal in Cordoba.
Coria defeated Germany’s Dominik Koepfer, Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo and France’s Benoit Paire to reach the final four before falling to fellow Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who went on to win the title on ATP debut.
At the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires the following week, Coria was beaten by Cerundolo’s older brother Francisco in the first round. The latter went on to reach his first-ever ATP final in the tournament before going down to eventual champion David Schwartzman.
In his final tournament of the South American clay season in Santiago, the World No. 84 Coria defeated Italy’s Gianluca Mager in the first round but fell to Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas in the Round of 16.
In his last tournament at the Miami Open, Coria forced the decider against Marin Cilic before bowing out of the first round.
Millman v Coria Prediction and Tip
Millman is the seeded player, but he struggles on clay. He has an 11-19 overall record on the surface and will be playing his first clay court tournament of the season in Cagliari. In contrast, Coria thrives on clay, has a 10-10 overall record on the surface at the ATP level, and all 10 of his Challenger and Futures titles have come on clay.
Also, the Australian is not in good form, so expect Coria to win this contest and advance to the next round where he would be meeting either Laslo Djere or Italian wildcard Federico Gaio.
Tip: Coria to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
