Anastasija Sevastova v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

Both their previous meetings have come on clay and in 2019. Potapova won the first at the Prague Open in three sets but Sevastova then avenged that defeat in Jurmala at the semifinal, en route her third WTA title victory.

Sevastova Coming off Career Best in Miami

Aided by a Simona Halep withdrawal and wins over Cori Gauff and Ana Konjuh, Sevastova made it to the quarterfinal at the recently-concluded Miami Open before she fell to the Elina Svitolina. That didn’t just make it her best performance in Miami but also her best run of the season which has seen her win back to back matches in a competition just once other than this.

What’s also interesting to note is Sevastova possesses a good record on clay court surfaces, so it’s not as if a switch over to Charleston should bother her too much. She has already won two of her three career titles on clay and has made it as far as the semifinal at the Madrid Open a few years ago.

That said, she was knocked out in the first round at both the clay court competitions she had played last season and Sevastova’s last match win on red dirt had come in 2019 in Jurmala – that was also where she had won her last WTA title.

Can she now open this season on clay with a victory, transferring her form on hard court surfaces over to the Charleston Open?

Potapova Holds a Similarity with Her Opponent

Clay doesn’t bother Potapova too much by the looks of things, at least based on the small sample size of the matches the Russian has played in her career so far.

She also enters this tournament with a couple of solid performances on hard court surfaces, much like her opponent, having made the third round of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Dubai after beating Laura Siegemund, Madison Keys and Belinda Bencic.

Most importantly, and coincidentally, however, Potapova’s last match victory on clay came in Jurmala in 2019. And her last defeat too was at that tournament, at the hands of the eventual winner, Sevastova herself!

Which is why, we believe despite Potapova’s solidity on clay, she is up against an opponent who has beaten her before and on this surface and that makes it doubly tough for the Russian.

Sevastova v Potapova Prediction and Tip

A fighting win for Sevastova is what we expect in this one, which is why the odds of 4/5 for her win sounds like a tempting option.

Tip: Sevastova to win: 4/5 (bet365)
