Tommy Paul v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

Tommy Paul and Yannick Hanfmann have met once before on the ATP tour with the American Paul triumphing over the 108th-ranked Hanfmann at the 2019 US Open in New York.

Paul Hoping for a Few Wins

Paul hasn’t had an impressive season so far. In fact, the American has struggled to win consecutive matches on the tour.

The only time, he did win two matches in a row was at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam. Paul defeated Lorenzo Sonego in comfortable fashion in the first round, but was made to fight against Alexander Bublik in the second round. However, he ran out of gas as he was beaten by Marton Fucsovics in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

He began the year with a round of 16 exit at Delray Beach and then won a match to enter the Round of 32 at the Murray River Open. Paul left Australian shores after a Round of 64 showing at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Paul’s struggles continued in both Acapulco and Miami, where he couldn’t progress beyond the first round. In Acapulco, he was unable to do much about former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic’s serve and lost in straight sets. While in Miami, the American came across a supremely confident Marcos Giron, who knocked him out of the competition in Round 1.

So far, Paul has registered a 5-6 win/loss record for the season and he will be looking to win a couple of matches in Italy. However, for that to happen, he must start well against Hanfmann, especially considering the fact, that the European clay is his favorite surface.

Hanfmann Needs to Find a Mantra to Win Matches

Challenging Paul in the first round will be Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann, who enters the tournament after notching up a not so impressive 2-6 win/loss record for the year so far.

The 29-year-old German’s two victories have come against James Duckworth at the Singapore Open and Steve Johnson at the Miami Masters. Apart from these aforementioned wins, Hanfmann’s season has nothing solid to show.

Throughout the year, Hanfmann’s major worry has been his serve. More often than not, the German has felt the pressure on his serve and has been broken multiple times in almost all the matches he has played in 2021.

The truth is Hanfmann’s serve is one of his main weaknesses and the higher-ranked players tend to target it early on to get the lead in the match.

Once they achieve a lead over Hanfmann, he finds himself under more and more pressure and fails to deliver in such circumstances. For the record, Hanfmann has lost his serve at least once in all the 11 matches, he has played this year.

Paul v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

While Paul has been a bit more consistent this season, Hanfmann has hardly won any matches.

However, the red dirt is the favorite surface of both these players and the two are expected to fight long and hard during the course of this match in Cagliari. With 6 Challenger titles under his belt, Hanfmann may have won two more Challenger trophies than Paul, the German will still enter the contest as the underdog.

On the other hand, Paul, who is ranked 55 places above Hanfmann would want to begin his sojourn on a promising note on the European clay-courts. So expect a tight contest with Paul winning in three.

Tip: Paul to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
