Before she made it to the quarterfinal at the Monterrey Open and then entered the second round at the Miami Open as well, Saisai was on the kind of streak one hopes one does get on to in their careers.
The Chinese world number 53 had ended the previous season with a defeat on the WTA tour – having not played any tennis the whole of the post the pandemic break – and followed it up with six successive losses to kick-start the 2021 season.
What made it worse for Saisai was some of those losses came against players she would have had no difficulties beating earlier – Irina Begu, Francesca Jones and Misaki Doi – but she just couldn’t find her rhythm.
Which is why those results in Monterrey and Miami were so important for the world number 53. With some of her lost confidence rediscovered, Saisai will now hope to get to the next level – getting wins on clay, which hasn’t been her most preferred surface anyway.
The good news for Saisai is she starts off against a player ranked outside the top 150 whose last win on the main draw of a WTA event came at the Houston Open of 2019.

Arconada More Prominent on the ITF circuit
With four titles on the lower ITF circuit including three last season, Arconada has tried to make the jump up on to the WTA level but has so far found success very elusive.
Her results in recent times are testimony to this with the American last winning a WTA main draw match towards the end of the 2019 season. Since then, however, a combination of poor form and the pandemic-induced break have made it difficult for Arconada to get any sort of a rhythm in her tennis.
Even last season, for instance, Arconada barely won anything – just one round of the main draws of the $125k competition in Indian Wells.
This year has begun in a worse fashion. She has not reached the main draw of any of the WTA competitions, losing in the qualifiers of four of them, and even on the ITF circuit, her best performance has been a semifinal appearance at Boca Raton.
Saisai v Arconada Prediction and Tip
While Saisai’s form is a definite concern, she looks to have given herself some more time with her results in the last two tournaments she played in while Arconada has continued to struggle. We see Saisai winning big in this one.
