It was a good start to the new season for Italy’s Stefano Travaglia. The Italian displayed great character as he staged comeback after comeback to reach his first ATP final at Grace Ocean Road Open in Melbourne. A title remained elusive though as he went down to fellow Italian Jannik Sinner.
The 29-year-old Italian was coming off a good 2020 season, which saw him reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, as he beat Pablo Andujar and Kei Nishikori in the first two rounds of the French Open before going down to the King of Clay Rafa Nadal.
He also reached the third round of a Masters 1000 event for the first time last year, when he won his first two rounds in Rome before going down to compatriot Matteo Berrettini.
Travaglia also featured in the Antalya Open earlier this year, winning his first two matches and reaching the quarterfinals before being beaten by David Goffin in straight sets.
Since the good start earlier on this year, it has been a dismal run for the Italian for most of March, with four consecutive opening round losses, of which twice he lost to Frances Tiafoe. Moving from the faster hard courts to the slower clay, Travaglia will be hoping for a change of fortunes here on.

Simon Looking To Get ’21 Season Going
Gilles Simon has been on the tour for about a decade and a half, was ranked in the top ten of the ATP rankings at a point in time, been the winner of 14 ATP titles and looking to move back up in the ATP rankings.
Simon has been a consistent performer on the tour for a considerable period of time and has been intermittently successful in recent times as well.
The Frenchman won two ATP titles in 2018 and was a runner-up to Feliciano Lopez at the Queen’s Club ATP 500 in 2018, and was a regular in the ATP top 50 rankings from 2005-2017, with 2017 being the first year he ended the year ranked outside the top 50.
2020 was mixed year for Simon, with a slow start to the year followed by promising showings indoors at Rotterdam and Marseille. His return to the tour was not overly impressive, failing to qualify for the the Masters 1000s on the clay and hard courts, and underwhelming performances at the Grand Slams, followed by a somewhat improved European indoor season.
2021 has not seen much of the Frenchman who lost in the second round of the Melbourne ATP 250 to countryman Jeremy Chardy before lopsided losses in the opening round of the Aussie Open and back home at Montpellier. Having not played since, Simon will hope the slower European clay brings him much needed success.
Travaglia v Simon Prediction and Tip
It is a clash of two players looking for a good summer of tennis, Travaglia starts as a strong favorite given his better form recently. The aging Simon with minimal match play this season may need some time to brush off any residual rust.
