Marie Bouzkova v Timea Babos Head to Head

In their only previous match which was held at the 2018 Monterrey Open, Babos had needed two sets to get past Bouzkova and move into the second round.

Bouzkova Shocked in Miami after Solid Start

It’s been a good season for Bouzkova so far, with the Czech player jumping up the rankings despite the tweaked system making it difficult to run up the charts. Having started the year ranked 52nd, she was up to 46th before her first round exit in Miami pulled her back one place.

And this was thanks to her performances at the Phillip Island Trophy and the Guadalajara Open, where she reached the final and semifinal respectively.

Wins Jil Teichmann and Bianca Andreescu were two of the more memorable performances at the former event, where she finally fell to Daria Kasatkina in the title-decider.

Earlier in the season, Bouzkova had also made it as far as the third round at the Yarra Valley Classic, but the bigger question now would be whether she manages to adapt to the clay court swing.

It’s not Bouzkova’s most preferred surface, having won just one main draw match on clay over the last three years and while her opponent hasn’t been in the best of form either, it might get as easy as it has been so far this season for the Czech.

Babos Slides Out of Top 100

A more focussed approach towards doubles tennis has helped Babos win four Grand Slam titles alongside being runnerup at four other major tournaments. That, in turn, has meant, her singles record has suffered and the former world number 25 has slid down the charts and is now outside the top 100 on the rankings.

Opening round wins at the Gippsland Trophy, Australian Open and WTA Lyon have been the only victories notched up by Babos this year as a result too. On clay, Babos last won a main draw match at the 2019 Istanbul Open, nearly two years ago.

This focus on doubles, lack of singles results and the fact she isn’t at her best on clay, makes it look highly unlikely she would be able to test her much superior opponent in this opening round clash.

Bouzkova v Babos Prediction and Tip

While on one hand Bouzkova has shown form on hard court, she struggles on clay. Babos has not had too many singles results on hard court either but the fact that there’s not much to go by on red dirt for her opponent brings her into the picture here too, and we could see a fighting encounter here.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
