Jasmine Paolini v Kristie Ahn Head to Head

This will be the first time that Paolini and Ahn will be facing off in a competitive encounter.

Paolini Moves to Favourite Surface

With just three wins in main draws of tournament this season, Paolini would be hoping to turn things around quickly enough when she takes to the clay court swing.

Clay has been the Italian player’s favourite surface with Paolini having won seven of her eight ITF titles on this surface. A look at how things went for her in the previous season also points to the same – while she won four main draw matches on clay, there were no wins on other court surfaces.

Go back one year and Paolini’s win-loss record on clay was 35-13, including performances on the ITF circuit. That also included a quarterfinal appearance at the Palermo Open, and a semifinal in Karlsruhe.

To cut a long story short, with Paolini having also improved her hard court performances this season, it would be interesting to see if she can up the ante on clay as well. She has shown what she is capable of and starts out here against a player ranked lower than her. Gives her a good chance of starting out her clay court campaign of the season with a solid showing.

Ahn Hoping for a Rare Clay Win

Unlike her opponent, Ahn is a much better player on hard court surfaces, and generally struggles on red dirt. That is exemplified by her record, which saw her win her last match on clay in 2019 at this very competition.

Coming into the 2019 Bogota Open as a lucky loser, she shocked Jelena Ostapenko in the first round before going down in the second. That was her only main draw win on this surface that season, following on from something similar in 2018.

Unfortunately for Ahn, it’s not like her performance on hard courts have been a lot to admire either. A first qualifying round exit at the Monterrey Open was followed by another defeat in the qualifiers of the Miami Open.

And now with clay being her Achilles Heel, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if she fails to make it past the opener here.

Paolini v Ahn Prediction and Tip

Paolini should have this in the bag, and by our reckoning, it should be a straight-set win for the Italian clay-court specialist.

Tip: Paolini to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
