Sloane Stephens v Wang Xinyu Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the 28-year-old Stephens and the 19-year-old Wang.

2016 Charleston Open champion Sloane Stephens begins her 2021 campaign on Tuesday. The 28-year-old American comes into the tournament with a woeful 1-5 record in 2021.
The World No. 57 won her only match of the year at the Miami Open two weeks ago, when she battled past France’s Oceane Dodin 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. However, her disappointments continued as she was knocked out in the second round by fellow American Amanda Anisimova.
Stephens, who has played in nine finals and won six titles, began the season with a straight sets defeat to Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez in the first round of the Grampians Trophy. The 2018 French Open finalist then bowed out of the first round of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year, losing to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva despite taking the first set.
In her next tournament at the Phillip Island Trophy, Stephens could barely win four games in her first round match against Russia’s Varvara Gracheva, and carried that form to Monterrey, losing to Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova in the first round with the exact same scoreline of 2-6, 2-6.
The American, who hasn’t won a title since winning in Miami in 2018 and who hasn’t reached a final since losing the WTA Finals final the same year, has been in poor form since 2020.
Last year, Stephens won just four of her 15 matches and lost eight of her first round matches.
In 2016, the American won the Charleston title by beating Russian qualifier Elina Vesnina in the final.

Wang Qualifies as Lucky Loser
Facing Stephens in the first round will be 19-year-old Chinese Wang Xinyu, who enters the main draw as a lucky loser.
Wang defeated America’s Kennedy Shaffer 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 in the first qualifying round but then lost her second qualifier against Romania’s Gabriela Talaba 6-4, 1-6, 3-6.
The Chinese right-hander, who lost in the first qualifying rounds of the Australian Open and the Lyon Open, qualified for the main draw of the St. Petersburg Open and then won her first round against Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova before falling to Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets.
Wang also won her first round match at the Miami Open, defeating Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson 6-2, 6-2, but she was outplayed by Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the Round of 64.
Sloane Stephens v Wang Xinyu Prediction and Tip
Wang comes to Charleston having won back-to-back first round matches. And the World No. 147 will believe she has a chance against the struggling Stephens, who has won just five times in her previous 20 matches.
However, the American is far more experienced, a former champion in Charleston and also ended her 2021 losing streak in Miami, so she will be looking to get back her form with a first round win.
Expect a close contest with Stephens advancing and setting up a second round meeting with eighth seed Madison Keys, who has a first round bye.
