Lara Arruabarrena v Jessica Plazas Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between the 167th-ranked Arruabarrena and Plazas, who is currently 982nd in the world.

Arruabarrena Double-Bagels Qualifiers

While clay is a favourite surface for Arruabarrena, not too many would have expected her to come through the qualifiers here in Bogota in the manner that she did. Starting out as a favourite against both her qualifier opponents, Arruabarrena crushed Carol Zhao and Yuliana Monroy by the same scoreline.

6-0, 6-0.

And she now has the opportunity to take that form forward given her opponent is a teenage wild-card, ranked outside the top 900 at the moment.

Speaking of Arruabarrena’s own form, she did show some spark at the start of the resumption of tennis last year, winning a couple of qualifying rounds in Palermo, and then making it to the third round of the Prague Open.

However, a six-match losing streak ended her season, and when she began the new year with two more defeats, her struggles seemed to have no end. A qualifying win at Monterrey before she fell to Anna Kalinskaya seemed to have helped her confidence – or at least halted the fast-dwindling confidence – as she then took to the clay courts of Bogota like a duck to water.

A second round place beckons for the Spaniard.

Plazas 4-11 on ITF Tour Since 2020

It’s not been the best of starts to her career but things have particularly been underwhelming for Plazas since the start of the previous season.

The Colombian player, who played just four matches before the pandemic hit – and none after that – has won just four of the 15 matches she has played in since 2020. Last season, she lost all her meetings, while this year, Plazas’ only wins have come in the qualifiers of the ITF circuit.

She won a couple of qualifying rounds at an ITF competition in Antalya in February and then one apiece in Antalya – again – and Buenos Aires. Unfortunately for her, Plazas hasn’t even made it to the main draw of an ITF tournament this year, which makes her participation here in Bogota a bit of a surprise.

The question now is whether Plazas can avoid becoming just one to make the numbers in this opening round.

Arruabarrena v Plazas Prediction and Tip

This is a stunning one with Arruabarrena starting out at 1/500 to win this while Plazas is 50/1 to record an upset. A straight-set win, with Plazas barely managing to win a game or two in the entire match looks most likely a result.

Tip: Arruabarrena to win in straight sets: 1/150 (bet365)
