Garbine Muguruza v Magdalena Frech Head to Head
Muguruza and Frech have never played each other before this in a competitive encounter.

Muguruza Kick-Starts Clay Swing with Form, Confidence
It’s been the kind of a start to the season for Muguruza that had gone missing about two years ago. She made it to the final last year at the Australian Open and while there were signs she was slowly returning to her best, it’s been in 2021 where the Spaniard has finally flowered into this experienced, two-time Grand Slam winner who has become very difficult to beat.
Clay will be a different challenge, obviously, but as far as form and confidence go, Muguruza enters this swing second to none. On the WTA race to the finals charts, she is actually second to just one – Naomi Osaka!
No other player has made it to three WTA finals this season, having done that at the Yarra Valley Classic, WTA Doha and then against in Dubai. She lost to Ash Barty and Petra Kvitova in the first two but then fired past the likes of Amanda Anisimova, Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens to capture her first WTA title of the season in Dubai.
And while she was knocked out in the fourth round at the Miami Open, Muguruza’s only concern here will be the quick turnaround between that competition and this one, and the adjustment to be made between the surfaces.

Qualifier Frech Minces Min
Having not won a single main draw match since the WTA Prague in August last season, Frech finally added to her list with an opening round win over Grace Min.
A qualifier, who had earlier made it to round one with back to back straight-set victories, Frech thrashed Min 6-2, 6-4 to set up this second round meeting with Muguruza.
Frech was on court for a mere hour and 27 minutes, broke her opponent four times and lost her own serve just once in the entire match. That came early in the first set when Min broke back to level things out at 2-2 but from that point onward, it was all one-way traffic in favour of the Polish player.
As a clay-court specialist who has already played three matches on this surface, Frech holds that edge over her Spanish opponent who will kick-start with her first, but will that be enough to usurp the former world number one?
Muguruza v Frech Prediction and Tip
While Muguruza is an obvious favourite, we think it could be slightly closer than the 1/10 on offer for her win. We could see Frech put up a better fight and the over 18.5 games in the match looks like a tempting option. So does our tip below.
Tip: Muguruza to win AND over 17.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
