Pablo Carreno Busta v Mario Vilella Martínez Head to Head
These two had met long ago, in the qualifiers of the Valencia Open of 2013 and that match on the indoor hard court had resulted in a 6-1, 6-0 victory for Carreno-Busta.

After featuring at the ATP Cup earlier this year, Carreno Busta’s only two appearance in tournaments this season came at the Australian Open and then at the ATP Dubai. And the underlying feeling has been that of the Spaniard having begun quite slow.
At the Australian Open, the world number 15 made past Kei Nishikori and Jiri Vesely in the first two rounds before having to retire from his third round encounter. The reason he gave was he wasn’t feeling too well.
Unfortunately for Carreno Busta, he did not play again for about a month before featuring in Dubai where he went down in three sets to Marton Fucsovics. That was after he was a set up.
Which brings him to his first match on clay for the season after getting a first round bye. The Spaniard has a couple of French Open quarterfinals under his belt already, and he had reached the last eight stage of the Italian Open in 2018 as well.
Four his seven ATP finals have also come on the red dirt surface as well, and while he has won just one of them, Carreno Busta has done well enough on this surface to be a threat in this tournament.

Martínez’s Career-Best Season
He is a clay-court specialist but till before this tournament, Martinez hadn’t won a single match in the main draw of any clay court ATP competitions. In fact, drill a little deeper and till before the start of this year, Martinez hadn’t even won a main draw encounter in any competition.
It was at the Great Ocean Road Open that the 25-year-old finally struck gold. He won the first two rounds of that tournament which included victories over Yannick Hanfmann and Nikoloz Basilashvili, before falling to Jordan Thompson.
Martinez fell in the first round of the Australian Open, having earlier qualified for it before finally making it to the main draw here as a qualifier.
And now with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round, Martinez has given himself a chance to further improve on the ATP rankings chart. He now faces a higher quality but slightly rusty player for a place in the last eight.
