New Number One American Hoping For Good Start To Clay
Twenty-three year old American Taylor Fritz now ranked number 30 in the world is currently the highest ranked American on the ATP Tour, effective this week. Ranked as high as number 24 in the world a year ago, it has been a mixed run for the American since the return of the tour post pandemic.
While the US hard court season of 2020 saw a good fight from Fritz, he was unable to get the better at crucial junctures like his five setter against Denis Shapovalov at the US Open last year. An indifferent run on the European clay and indoor hart court season in Europe saw him end 2020 without anything to write home about n particular.
The 2021 season began Down Under for the American who played three consecutive tight matches at the Aussie Open, none more taxing that his valiant effort in a five-setter against top seed and now nine-time Melbourne Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
This was followed by a good run at Doha where he got the better of David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov before a straight sets loss against eventual champion Nikoloz Basilashvili. Mixed showings at Dubai and Miami resulted in round of 16 losses to the in-form players Andrey Rublev and Alexander Bublik and the American now kicks off his clay season here as the number two seed with an opening round bye.

Martin Scalps Vesely Amids Poor ’21 Season
Slovak Andrej Martin did not have the best of starts to the season winning one set across the Delray Beach Open and the stint Down Under. Moving to more favored clay, the Slovak did well on the ATP Challenger Tour, but none too impressive at the Cordoba Open, nor in Buenos Aires or in Chile.
Martin played a good opening match against Czech veteran Jiri Vesely winning a tight three setter. Martin won a close first 6-4, and then lost momentum with a 2-6 second set loss, but then pulled himself back for a 6-1 deciding set victory.
The Slovak has primarily played on the ATP Challenger Tour, and his most success on the main draw has been a third round at the 2016 French Open and a runner-up performance at Umag, evidencing his comfort with the slower surfaces. Martin will hope this week and onwards will see a turnaround to his season on the clay that suits him well.
Struff v Martin Prediction and Tip
The Slovak looked in good touch in the opener but has had a poor season prior. On the other hand, Fritz has been performing at a consistent level and will take some doing for Martin to pull off anything spectacular here. Expect a straight sets win for the American.
Tip: Fritz to win in straight sets : 11/8 (bet365)
