Sonego Hoping to Advance Miami Form
A clay-court specialist, Sonego had struggled through the hard court season of 2020 but seems to have made some solid performances this year. He made it to the third round in Dubai and after an opening bye reached the round of 16 at the Miami Masters just prior to this competition in Cagliari.
For someone who is bred on clay court surfaces, that kind of form outside of clay would work tremendously when he now shifts back to his favourite surface.
Last season, Sonego had made it as far as the quarterfinal at the Rio Open before the pandemic break and then came back with a fourth round appearance at the French Open. His best showing on clay was a semifinal showing at the Kitzbuhel Open in 2019.
He had a first round bye and now takes on a veteran who is coming off a shock win in his opening round match.

Simon Shocks Stefano
With just four matches under his belt this year and only one win to boot, Simon was coming into this competition with neither form, nor preference for this surface. And nor was his opponent a pushover qualifier ranked outside the top 400.
Which is why when Simon lost the first set of his opening round match against Stefano Travaglia, the writing was on the wall.
Except that Simon turned it around so dramatically that it would have left Travaglia stunned. More so because Travaglia was a break up in the second set, before he was broken twice in each of the second and third sets to crash out of the competition.
Simon would now hope he can replicate that showing against Sonego, but history seems to be against the Frenchman. Because the last time he had won back to back matches on clay was in April 2019, when he won three to reach the semifinal of the Marrakech Open.
Can he make it two shocks in as many days?
Sonego v Simon Prediction and Tip
Sonego starts off at 4/9 and the only thing stopping him from winning this is the lack of clay court match practice. Still tipping him to win easily here.
Tip: Games Handicap Sonego -3.5: 5/6 (bet365)
