Zidansek Sends Kalinskaya Packing

World No. 93 Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia needed just an hour and 19 minutes to defeat 22-year-old Russian Anna Kalinskaya in the first round of the Bogota Open.

The 6-0, 7-5 win against the World No. 107 improved the 23-year-old Slovenian to 5-5 in main draws this year, and 6-6 including the qualifying rounds.

Zidansek, who was a finalist in Nurnberg in 2019, was 5-10 overall in 2020.

She began the 2021 season on a high in Abu Dhabi, reaching the Round of 16 after stunning America’s Jennifer Brady in the first round and defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the next before falling to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. The loss was followed by first-round exits at the Gippsland Trophy and the Australian Open.

Zidansek ended the three-match losing streak in Gudalajara, beating Anna Blinkova in the Round of 32 but falling to Catherine McNally in the Round of 16. The pattern followed in Monterrey, when she beat Renata Zarazua in the first round but lost to Ann Li in the Round of 16.

She failed to qualify for the Miami Open, but has reached the pre-quarterfinal round for the fourth time this year.

Zidansek has won two WTA 125K titles, both on the clay courts of Croatia in 2018 and 2019.

Gatto-Monticone Lucky to Get Past Sharma

Facing Zidansek in the next round will be Italy’s Giulia Gatto-Monticone, who rallied from a set down to knock out World No. 95 Astra Sharma of Australia in the first round.

The Italian, ranked 177th in the world, needed two hours and 23 minutes to beat the 25-year-old Aussie 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to enter the Round of 16. However, there was some controversy involved in the match when the chair umpire forgot the score which in turn meant Sharma lost out on the opportunity to break her opponent in the final set.

This was Gatto-Monticone’s first win at the top level this year. She did win a couple of qualifying matches to reach the main draw in Lyon, but was beaten by Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova in the first round.

A winner of 11 singles titles at the ITF Circuit, the 33-year-old Italian has played in three ITF events this year reaching the semifinal in Argentina in the last week of March.
