Garbine Muguruza v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two players and Muguruza has won both times.

In the first, played at the China Open of 2016, Muguruza was a 6-2, 7-6 winner before taking her down for the second time on the clay court of the 2017 French Open. That was a third round match.

Muguruza Blitzes Frech

It took Muguruza only an hour and 11 minutes to establish supremacy in her first match on clay this season. The Spanish player carved out a neat 6-1, 6-3 victory over Magdalena Frech, continuing from where she had left on the hard court swing earlier this season.

Muguruza lost just eight points on her own serve, faced only two break points and was never broken in her second round encounter against Frech. In contrast, she broke her opponent four times, twice in each set to warm up for the rest of the tournament.

The 2016 French Open champion had earlier kick-started her season with three finals appearances on the WTA circuit, before finally winning one title.

She came into this competition on the back of a fourth round exit at the Miami Open at the hands of Biance Andreescu and will now look to overcome her Kazakh opponent to set up a possible re-meeting with Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinal after having lost to her in the final of WTA Doha.

Putintseva Doesn’t Spare Fellow Kazakh

After having carved out a fighting two-set win over Harriet Dart in her opening round match, Putintseva demolished fellow Kazakh Zarina Diyas 6-2, 6-2 in the second round of this competition to set up this meeting with Muguruza.

In doing so, she is now a win away from emulating her best ever showing at this tournament, having reached the quarterfinal at the 2018 event.

Putintseva needed an hour and 22 minutes in a match that had a total of eight breaks of serve, including six in the first set. In fact it was Diyas who drew first blood by breaking Putintseva in the very first game, and then again in the third but was herself broken twice by Putintseva in the following games to make it 2-2.

That remained the last time Putintseva allowed her countrywoman a sniff. She rolled off seven games in a row to win the first set and take a 3-0 lead in the second before breaking her once more to clinch the win.

Can she now deliver a performance on similar lines against a player of the calibre and form of Muguruza?

Muguruza v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

While Muguruza is 1/5 to win this, and 4/7 to do that in straight sets we believe the better value would be in a fighting two-set win.

Tip: Muguruza to win AND Over 18.5 games in the match: 11/10 (bet365)
