Taylor Fritz v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head
They have met four times before, including a qualifying round in Queen’s Park in London and Fritz has won on three of those occasions, while Sonego has won just once.
Their first meeting was in that qualifying round in 2018, which was won by the American in three sets. The same year, Fritz got his first main draw win against Sonego, winning the first round contest at Wimbledon in four sets.
In their only meeting on clay, Sonego defeated Fritz in straight sets in the third round of the French Open in 2020.
They last met in Doha, earlier this year with Fritz winning the Round of 32 contest in straight sets.

Fritz Eases Past Bedene
World No. 30 Taylor Fritz needed just an hour and 26 minutes to defeat Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene on Friday and reach a second semifinal of the year.
The second seed, who had lost his only previous meeting against the Slovenian, struck eight aces and won 86 percent of first serve points (25 of 29) to win the quarterfinal contest 6-3, 6-4.
The 23-year-old American, who had a bye in the first round, had beaten Slovakia’s Andrej Martin 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the second round.
On Saturday, Fritz will be competing in a second semifinal this year, having made the final four in Qatar last month.
The American, who is 11-5 this year, had defeated Lorenzo Sonego, David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov en route to the semifinal in Doha, however, he failed to reach a sixth career final after falling to eventual champion Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets.
Among the five previous final appearances, the 6’4″ Fritz finished runner-up in Memphis in 2016, Los Cabos and Atlanta in 2019 and Acapulco in 2020. He won his only title on grass in Eastbourne in 2019.
Apart from his runs to the semifinals in Doha and Sardegna in 2021, Fritz reached the Round of 16 in Melbourne-2, Dubai and Miami and the Round of 32 at the Australian Open.

Sonego Rallies To Oust Hanfmann
Facing Fritz in the semifinal will be World No. 34 Lorenzo Sonego, who rebounded from 3-6, 3-5 down to defeat Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The third seeded Italian didn’t make a single double fault in the two-hour-and-44-minute contest, while his opponent had eight in the match.
Hanfmann, who broke Sonego in the fifth game of the second set, looked to be cruising after taking a 5-3 lead in the second, but Sonego held his serve next game and then broke the German to 15 to draw level.
Once back in the contest, the Italian didn’t look back and marched to the finish line. He got 60% of his first serves right, won 63% of those points and 60% of his second serve points. He broke Hanfmann four times from five break point opportunities, while got broken thrice in the match.
Sonego, who also received a first-round bye in the tournament, had beaten France’s Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-1 in an hour-and-36-minute second-round contest.
A two-time finalist on the tour, Sonego won the title in Antalya in 2019 and finished runner-up in Vienna last year.
He came to Cagliari with a 6-7 record in 2021, having reached just one quarterfinal in Montpellier, which he lost to David Goffin.
Friday’s win improved Sonego to 23-23 on clay.
Fritz v Sonego Prediction and Tip
The only surface where Sonego has beaten Fritz is clay, something the Italian may want to remind the American of. But Fritz has looked comfortable in his first two rounds and should go through after a good fight to maintain his dominance in the rivalry.
Tip: Sonego to win: 4/5 (bet365)
