Ons Jabeur v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

These two players have never faced off on the WTA circuit. Their only previous outing came in an ITF tournament in Budapest in 2018 on clay and Jabeur won that match in straight sets.

Jabeur Sends Gauff Packing

Having lost twice to Cori Gauff in her previous encounters, Jabeur knew she had to come up with something special to overcome her challenge at the quarterfinal stage. She had lost her previous five quarterfinal matches on the WTA circuit, something she needed to snap out as well.

Jabeur did both in a matter of an hour and 20 minutes, winning 6-3, 6-3 to make it to the semifinal, attributing the turnaround in fortunes to her mentally stronger outlook.

The Tunisian player came through after a difficult first set in which there were six service breaks, coming back to her best in the second set when she held on in the fifth game. Gauff fought back to stave off a couple of match-points at 2-5 but the much needed break-back never came and Jabeur completed the victory.

This follows a series of three previous wins over Martina Trevisan, Hailey Bapstiste and Alize Cornet to reach the last eight stage.

Kovinic Puts it Past Putintseva

While Jabeur did not waste too much time in getting past her opponent, Kovinic was involved in a near-three-hour encounter against Yulia Putintseva, needing three sets and a comeback from a set down to win her quarterfinal match.

Kovinic, who hadn’t made it to the semifinal of a WTA event since 2016, shared four breaks of serves in the first set before pushing it into a tie-breaker which Putintseva eased through.

The second set looked to be headed into a tie-breaker as well, with Kovinic’s advantage after breaking Putintseva in the seventh game getting nullified soon after. In a stunning turn of events though, Kovinic broke her opponent to love at 5-5 and then served out to level the match.

And then in the third, Kovinic showed why her wins over Leylah Fernandez and Petra Kvitova in the previous rounds hadn’t been flashes in the pan when she pulled away with three breaks of serve to win 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-1 and move into the semifinal.

Jabeur v Kovinic Prediction and Tip

Jabeur’s clay court form has been of the top quality and she shouldn’t have a lot of trouble getting past her 91st-ranked opponent to make it to her second WTA final.

Tip: Jabeur to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
