Tamara Zidansek v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head

As mentioned earlier, they have never played each other in a competitive encounter on the WTA tour but they have faced off previously on the ITF tour. In the three matches played on that tour, Zidansek leads 2-1, with all those matches played on clay and between 2015 and 2016.

Zidansek Sends Out Sara in Straights

Sara Errani had shown some sparkle of old but coming up against Zidansek, she fell woefully short of making it a better contest that it turned out to be. While some of the blame could be apportioned to her serving issues, it was Zidansek’s solid all-round play that also made it easier for the Slovenian to come through easily in the end.

Zidansek needed just an hour and 22 minutes to get past the former French Open finalist winning 6-3, 6-4 to enter the semifinal of this Bogota Open.

Having earlier overcome Anna Kalinskaya and Giulia Gatto-Monticone in straight sets, the odds were only slightly in favour of Zidansek against Errani, showing how closely the two were matched up by the bookmakers. Zidansek, however, started out with a break of serve in a longish second game and following a series of four successive breaks of serve shared by the two players, she held at 5-3 to clinch the set.

The Slovenian player then had to fight off a stern work-out from Errani in the second as well, when she fell two breaks behind. But the momentum shifted when she broke back in the fifth game and from there on Zidansek went on a roll to claim the next five games too and the match.

She will now face a player who has never been better than world number 128 before this week.

Tomova Comes Back from Behind

Tomova had already sent Anna-Lena Friedsam and Wang Yafan packing in the first two rounds of this competition and was 4/6 favourite to get past Nuria Parrizas-Diaz to make it to the semifinal.

Things did not begin too well for her though. She lost her serve in the very first game and while she levelled up soon after that it took her four deuces and two break-points before she held next. At 5-6, this happened again and Tomova’s struggles with her serve meant she was finally broken again while serving to stay in the set at 5-6.

Her comeback came in the second set when she ransacked the Parrizas-Diaz serve to rack up a 4-0 lead before winning the set 6-2 – her opponent holding her serve just once in the entire set.

The third set had five breaks of serve in total with Tomova edging past her opponent 6-4 to claim the first ever semifinal spot of her career.

Zidansek v Tomova Prediction and Tip

Zidansek’s experience and solid form makes her a heavy favourite to win this and we are backing her to do that in straight sets.

Tip: Zidansek to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
