Fognini Crushed in Marbella Opener
The last time the Monte-Carlo Masters was played, Fognini won the title, also defeating Rafael Nadal in the process. Two years on, as a defending champion, there are question-marks over Fognini’s form and rhythm, even on clay as he looks to overcome some poor recent form.
Form has been Fognini’s issue since the pandemic break, but things had begun to change in 2021. He won two of the four ATP Cup matches and then made the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Since then, however, Fognini’s results have begun to show a turnaround yet again. A second round loss at the Acapulco Open t0 Cameron Norrie was followed by an opening defeat at the Miami Masters where Sebastian Korda got the better of him.
The one loss that would have pinched the most, however, came last week at the Marbella Open. Given a bye to the second round, Fognini crashed out of the tournament on clay but more vitally won just three games in the entire match before crashing out to Jaume Munar.
Fognini now faces another clay court specialist, a player who had won a clay court title last season. Can he turn things around?

Kecmanovic Semifinalist at Buenos Aires
Unlike Fognini, Kecmanovic hadn’t played any matches on clay last week but he did participate in the South American swing earlier this season.
After falling in the first round of the Cordoba Open he managed to defeat Thiago Monteiro and Laslo Djere in his first two matches at the Buenos Aires Open to make it to the semifinal. And while Kecmanovic failed to make it to the title-decider, it was only because the loss came at the hands of Diego Schwartzman.
Kecmanovic, whose only career title had come on the clay courts of Kitzbuhel last season, has had a modest start to the season otherwise. His best performance came in the lead-up to the Australian Open when he made the quarterfinal of the Great Ocean Road Open while falling in the second round at the Australian Open, Acapulco Open and the Miami Masters.
Fognini wouldn’t be an easy opponent to face on this surface but the world number 46 will give himself a chance given his opponent’s erratic form.
Fognini v Kecmanovic Prediction and Tip
Kecmanovic, at 1/1 looks to be a tempting option but Fognini’s last defeat could be a case of trying to get his eye in on clay. Can the defending champion find himself a way to eke out a victory here?
Tip: Kecmanovic to win: 1/1 (bet365)
