Roberto Bautista Agut v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

This will be the sixth edition of the Bautista Agut-Fritz rivalry with the previous matches having resulted in a 4-1 scoreline for the Spaniard.

Their most recent match came at the 2019 Halle Open where Bautista Agut defeated Fritz 7-6 (10), 6-0, but what’s interesting to note is on clay, it’s 1-1. The tall, hard-serving Fritz had managed to carve out a win at the Lyon Open in 2019 when the tournament was played on clay there.

Bautista Agut Opens Clay Court Campaign

It’s been one of the more solid starts to the season for Bautista Agut, with the world number 11 having gone deep in three of the tournaments he has featured in this season. After a lacklustre start at the ATP Cup, Bautista Agut also fell in the first round at the Australian Open bringing to fore fears of a repeat of an underwhelming post-pandemic season last year.

It was at the Montpellier Open things looked to have changed for the Spaniard. Admittedly helped by an easy draw he made it to the final but the confidence rubbed on and he followed that up with a second appearance in a tournament final – that came at the ATP Doha where he shocked both, Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev en route the title-decider.

And a semifinal in Miami just before this competition consisted of wins over John Isner and Daniil Medvedev, making him the only player this season to have defeated both Medvedev and Rublev.

The only issue for the Spaniard? Bautista Agut hasn’t played a single match on clay in a while unlike his opponent who has had a week at Cagliari coming into this tournament.

Fritz Steady with a Good Look-In

Once ranked 24th in the world, Fritz has fallen six places but as far as consistency is concerned, he has done rather well so far this season. A third round appearance at the Australian Open kick-started that bit for the American before he went as far as the semifinal at the Doha Open – his best performance of the year so far.

That run consisted of wins over Lorenzo Sonego, David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov before he fell to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the last four. A third round entry in Dubai and a fourth round at the Miami Masters punctuated his hard court campaign before he turned his attention towards clay.

And it’s been a decent start to that for Fritz, who defeated Andrej Martin and Aljaz Bedene in consecutive rounds before falling in three sets to the clay court specialist Lorenzo Sonego.

Can Fritz use that extra practice on clay to squeak past his opponent here?

Bautista Agut v Fritz Prediction and Tip

While Bautista Agut is a favourite to win this with an offer of 4/11 from bet365, the question is whether Fritz’s recent decent showing on clay could make things interesting. Expecting Fritz to win a set

Tip: Fritz to win a set – Yes: 4/5 (bet365)
