Lajovic Looking To Match 2019 Exploits
Having reached his first ATP 1000 final in the last edition in 2019, World No. 29 Dusan Lajovic returns to Monte Carlo with hopes of matching his 2019 exploits.
The 30-year-old enters the tournament with a 6-8 record in 2021.
Starting the year with two defeats at the ATP Cup, Lajovic produced his best performance at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round for the first time in Melbourne, and second time at a Grand Slam, before falling to Alexander Zverev.
He lost in the first round of Montpellier next before getting his biggest win of the year, defeating then No. 3 (and current No. 2) Daniel Medvedev in the first round in Rotterdam. He eventually lost in the Round of 16 to Borna Coric.
Another first round exit followed in Doha, which was followed by third round exits in Dubai and Miami, after he received first-round byes in the both the events.
The winner of the ATP title in Umag in 2019, Lajovic defeated Malek Jaziri, David Goffin, Dominic Thiem, Lorenzo Sonego and Daniil Medvedev, en route to the Monte-Carlo final in 2019. He was eventually beaten in the final by Fabio Fognini. None of the Serb’s matches in the last edition in Monte-Carlo had needed a third set.

Evans Struggling After a Sizzling Start to 2021
Facing Lajovic in the first round will be Britain’s Daniel Evans, who has a 4-12 overall record on clay and comes to the tournament with a 6-4 record this season.
Having begun the year by winning his first ever ATP title, Evans has fizzled out and is 1-4 since his win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final of Melbourne-2.
The World No. 32, who is a three-time finalist on the tour, did not drop a set in the season opener, as he defeated Pedro Sousa, Marcos Giron, Borna Coric, Jeremy Chardy and Auger-Aliassime on way to the ATP 250 title.
He was, however, beaten by compatriot Cam Norrie in four sets in the first round of the Australian Open, handed a second round defeat in Doha by Roger Federer and lost his first matches in Dubai and Miami to Aslan Karatsev and Frances Tiafoe respectively. All his last three defeats were close three-set affairs.
Lajovic v Evans Prediction and Tip
Lajovic is 76-74 on clay, while Evans is 4-12 on the surface, a clear indicator that the Serb will be the favourite going into this one. Expect Lajovic to advance into the next round for a potential second round meeting with 13th seed Hubert Hurkacz, who will face a qualifier in the first round.
Tip: Lajovic to win in straight sets: 6/5 (bet365)
