Dominant Zidansek Enters Final

Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek is one win away from her first WTA title as she sailed into her second career final at the Bogota Open on Saturday.

Zidansek, who hasn’t dropped a set this week, needed an hour and 29 minutes to beat Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 6-3, 7-5.

The win improved the 23-year-old to 8-5 this year in the main draws and 9-6 overall.

Zidansek had begun the tournament by beating Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya 6-0, 7-5 in the opening round. The win was followed by a 6-2, 6-3 Round of 16 victory over Italy’s Giulia Gatto-Monticone.

In the quarterfinal, the Slovenian had beaten 2012 French Open finalist Sara Errani 6-3, 6-4.

On Saturday, Zidansek could win only 28 percent second serve points (7 of 25), but won 67 percent of first serves and broke her opponent six times from eight break point opportunities. She also saved eight of 12 break points that she faced.

Ranked 93rd in the world, Zidansek reached the final in Nurnberg in 2019, but finished runner-up to Yulia Putintseva despite taking a one-set lead.

The Slovenian right-hander, who was 5-10 overall in 2020, began the 2021 season on a solid note in Abu Dhabi, reaching the Round of 16 after stunning America’s Jennifer Brady in the first round and defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the next before falling to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. The loss was followed by first-round exits at the Gippsland Trophy and the Australian Open.

Zidansek ended the three-match losing streak in Gudalajara, beating Anna Blinkova in the Round of 32 but falling to Catherine McNally in the Round of 16. The pattern followed in Monterrey, when she beat Renata Zarazua in the first round but lost to Ann Li in the Round of 16.

Zidansek, who failed to qualify for the Miami Open, has won two WTA 125K titles, both on the clay courts of Croatia in 2018 and 2019.

Osorio Too Strong For Tan

Facing Zidansek in the final will be local hope Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, who stormed past France’s Harmony Tan in the semifinal on Saturday.

Osorio needed just an hour and 25 minutes to win the contest 6-1, 6-2.

The 19-year-old, who was broken twice in the match, broke her opponent’s serve seven times to reach her first senior final.

Osorio, a former junior No. 1, had won the U.S. Open girl’s title in 2019.

She began her campaign in Bogota with a 6-3, 6-2 win against America’s Sachia Vickery.

A solid clay court player, Osorio, who has won all three of her ITF titles on clay, was dominant in the Round of 16 as well, defeating Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova 6-3, 6-3.

She continued her amazing run in the quarterfinal, defeating Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele 6-3, 7-5.

Saturday’s rout of Tan ensured that she too entered the final without losing a set.

The Colombian player, who won two qualifying rounds at the Australian Open this year but failed to qualify for the main draw, is playing in her second tournament of the year, having qualified for the Monterrey Open last month. She, however, lost her first round match to Kaja Juvan in straight sets.

Osorio is 13-5 overall across events in 2021.

Zidansek v Serrano Prediction and Tip

Both players are on top of their games and have dominated the earlier rounds. Should be a riveting final, despite the huge gap in their rankings. Zidansek, however, will be a slight favourite, given her experience at the top level.

Tip: Zidansek to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
