David Goffin v Marin Cilic Head to Head

The players have met eight times and the head-to-head is tied at 4-4. Their last two meetings on clay have both been at the Rome Masters and Cilic has won them both.

Goffin Looking To Start Favored Clay Surface Strong

David Goffin has been a regular feature at a number of tournaments this year  which saw him claim his fifth title in Montpellier and end a more than three year title-less drought.

Beginning the year in Antalya, the former World No. 7 struck form immediately, reaching the semifinal before going down to eventual champion Alex de Minaur in a close three-setter. The strong start to the season was followed by a couple of first round exits in Melbourne at the ATP 250 and the Aussie Open.

But, the Belgian hit good form at the Montpellier, beating Benjamin Bonzi, Lorenzo Sonego, Egor Gerasimov and Roberto Bautista Agut en route to a fifth career title, his first since winning the ATP 500 in Tokyo in 2017. Goffin featured at Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai thereafter but somehow did not hit the form he did at the ATP 250 in Montpellier.

More comfortable on the clay and a French Open quarter-finalist he will be hoping for better form here at Monte Carlo and over the next several weeks on the European clay.

Cilic Continues Quest For Form & Results

Former world number three Marin Cilic was a regular member of the top eight of the ATP rankings for most of the last decade. Cilic was the winner of the 2014 US Open as well as a three-time grand slam finalist, being runner-up at the 2017 Wimbledon and 2018 Australian Open, to Roger Federer each time.

However, the last season and a half has seen a notable drop in form and fitness, with injury layoffs, early losses and disappointing form as the Croat is now ranked number 45th in the world. Taking breaks from the tour and returning refreshed has not worked to Cilic’s favor either.

While the 2020 season after the pandemic hiatus was disappointing for Cilic, the 2021 season did not get off to the best of starts for him.

An early loss at the Melbourne ATP 250 was followed by a first round meeting against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, which also culminated in a first round loss for the Croat. A somewhat better run at the Singapore Open saw him make the final four but the Mexican Open saw another round one loss.

After two difficult first rounds at the Miami Open,  where he did beat number 13 seed Cristain Garin, Cilic put up an inspired display against rising Italian Lorenzo Musetti, but then ran into the red hot in-form Andrey Rublev which ended his run at the first Masters 1000 of the year.

Although clay is not his favored surface, the Croat will be hoping for a good showing on the dirt that would set him up well for the faster surfaces later this Summer and Fall.

Goffin v Cilic Prediction and Tip

This match-up has brought some close encounters in the past and every reason to believe this will be yet another. Both players are not quite at the level they were a couple seasons ago, but Cilic has definitely seen his game drop considerably more than Goffin. Expect a good match, but on the slow clay, one has to go with the Belgian.

Expect Goffin to win in a deciding third set.

Tip: Goffin to win in three sets: 10/3 (bet365)
