Lorenzo Sonego v Laslo Djere Head to Head

Two previous matches have been played between Sonego and Djere and both players have won one apiece. At Marrakesh in 2019, Sonego won it in straight sets, before Djere made it one apiece at Doha last year.

Sonego Stretched by Fritz

After a first round bye and an easy victory over Gilles Simon in the second, Sonego had to come back from a set down to get past Yannick Hanfmann in the quarterfinal. And while he would have hoped for an easier semifinal against hard court specialist Taylor Fritz, Sonego did not have it as comfortable as he would have wanted.

In a match lasting two hours and 39 minutes, Sonego carved out a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 victory, coming through after conceding 11 break-points but breaking Fritz eight times in the encounter.

An exchange of breaks in the first set took them to 4-4 but Sonego then broke Fritz to love and held on to pouch the first set. Things to be headed his way when he went 3-0 up in the second set with two breaks of serve, but his American opponent responded with something similar and then, out of the blue, overturned two game-points at 6-5 to clinch a break and the set.

That seemed to have woken Sonego up from his reverie as he broke Fritz four times to close out the match in the final set easily.

Djere Aiming to Win His Third

In his third tournament on clay this season, Djere has made it to his first final of the year, crushing Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets. Djere needed only 53 minutes to get past his opponent, winning 6-2, 6-0 to seal his title-deciding berth.

Djere broke his opponent five times including thrice in the second set but more importantly faced not a single break-point in the entire match.

This one-sided win follows a solid run in the competition for the Serb, where he has already gotten past Lorezo Musetti in the previous round and registered wins over Federico Gaio and John Millman in the first two rounds.

His earlier performances of the season include a quarterfinal appearance at the Buenos Aires and another such entry at the Santiago Open after having getting a first round bye.

Sonego v Djere Prediction and Tip

Djere is a favourite here at 4/6 and we will be backing him at those odds to come away with a victory and a third title on clay.

Tip: Djere to win: 4/6 (bet365)
