Cecchinato Reached Third Round Here in 2019

Cecchinato reached the third round here in 2019, two months after winning his third career title at the Argentina Open.

Last year he was beaten in the final of the Sardinia Open by Laslo Djere, but there has been little sign of that form this year, his best results coming in Cordoba and Sardinia again, where he reached the second round on both occasions.

Like Koepfer he had to qualify here, and was given a real battle by Marc-Andrea Huesler, having to come from behind to triumph in a three set match.

He then faced another Swiss opponent in the form of Henri Laaksonen, and that proved to be a more comfortable victory.

The issue for this former world number 16 is the drastic fall in his form, and hence ranking, with wins coming few and far between. The only solace coming into this tournament is this is a surface he has always enjoyed playing on, having won all his titles on clay.

Koepfer’s First Time in Monte Carlo

This is the first time that Koepfer has qualified for Monte Carlo, although he did prove his credentials on clay last year, by reaching the quarter-finals of the Italian Open, his best run yet in a Masters’ event.

Last month he also reached the semi-final in Acapulco before eventually losing to compatriot Alexander Zverev, but suffered the disappointment of a first-round exit in Miami, upset by the world 158, Hugo Gaston of France.

Koepfer had to come through two rounds of qualifying to get to this stage, comfortably beating Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain and then brushing aside the challenge of Juan-Ignacio Londero, allowing the Argentine just four games in a one-sided contest.

Cecchinato v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

Although both were made to qualify for this event, the fact that Koepfer was the number one seed at that stage of the tournament reflects his current form. He will start the favourite to make it to the second round.

Tip: Koepfer to win: 3/5 (bet365)
