Matteo Berrettini v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

Berrettini Back from an Abdominal Injury

Berrettini had made a decent start to the season, winning five of his first seven matches at the Antalya Open and the ATP Cup. He went into the Australian Open with that confidence, and with wins over Kevin Anderson and Karen Khachanov over the first three rounds of that competition, it looked like he had things under control.

Unfortunately for him, that third round win remains the last time he took to court before an abdominal strain made him withdraw from his fourth round match at the Australian Open. He hasn’t played since, taken his time to recover from his injury. The tweaked ranking system has helped him not fall outside the top 10.

The Italian has a solid record on clay though, having won two of his three ATP titles on this surface, including one at the Budapest Open in 2019 and Gstaad the season before that.

Which is why, coming up against Fokina in this encounter, the world number 10 will still continue to remain a favourite in this one.

Fokina Gets Past De Minaur

While Berrettini had a first round bye, Fokina needed to get past Australia’s Alex De Minaur to seal his second round berth.

Needing an hour and 56 minutes in the encounter, Fokina came through 6-4, 7-6 (3) in his opener, with De Minaur starting off stronger. Fokina had to save four break-points in the fourth game and was then broken in the sixth before he turned things around.

A break in the seventh game was followed by another ninth before the Spaniard served it out for the set.

In the second, Fokina looked to have taken the initiative with a 4-2 lead but lost his serve in the eighth. Four further holds of serves followed before the Spaniard edged past De Minaur in the tie-breaker.

Fokina had earlier made it to the second round at the Marbella Open last week, his only tournament on clay before this, before suffering a surprise loss to Ilya Ivashka. Can he now dish out the same treatment to Berrettini?

Berrettini v Fokina Prediction and Tip

Fokina, at 6/5, might prove to be a handful for his opponent, but a safe bet is for him to win a set in this one.

Tip: Fokina to win a set – Yes: 1/2 (bet365)
