Christina McHale v Sara Errani Head to Head

The pair have played each other seven times before on the WTA tour, and Errani leads their head-to-head series with a fair margin by five matches to two.

Ever since their maiden meeting in 2008, Errani has dominated their rivalry. In fact, the Italian was so dominant during her heyday that she accomplished a 4-0 win/loss record over her American opponent during the initial five years of their rivalry.

However, in 2015, McHale finally broke the Errani barrier as she defeated her in Rome. The victory was a big achievement for McHale as it came on Errani’s favourite surface – red clay.

Subsequently, McHale beat Errani on the hard-courts of Brisbane in 2017 before Errani got her revenge in Tianjin the same year.

McHale Still Searching For Consecutive Wins in 2021

McHale has compiled a pathetic 1-7 win/loss record in 2021. Actually, calling it pathetic is an understatement. The truth of the matter is that McHale, who is known for her booming ground-strokes and fast footwork, hasn’t been able to find her range so far this season.

She has struggled big time to put her opponents under any sort of pressure with the help of her aggressive baseline game.

The major factor behind the 91st-ranked McHale’s troubles has been her inconsistency. Moreover, a series of poor results have taken a toll on her mentality and she is no more playing like a fierce competitor.

In fact, whenever she starts losing points during the rallies, her head drops rather quickly, allowing her rivals to take advantage of the situation almost immediately, eventually leading her to lose matches quite quickly.

McHale’s only win in 2021 came against Ivana Popovic of Australia in the Adelaide qualifiers at the start of the year. Since then, McHale’s performance has only moved in one direction and that is south and she will be hoping to regain her touch in her bid to resurrect her career.

Errani Coming off the Bogota Quarterfinal

Errani, a former World No. 5 and Roland Garros finalist, have struggled to attain those lofty heights in recent times and that’s why she is now ranked 112th in the official WTA rankings.

However, unlike her challenger McHale, who has been successful in winning only a single match during the year, Errani has registered a respectable 7-7 win/loss record in 2021.

The Italian, who has shown glimpses of her past form on a few occasions this season, is coming to Charleston after a quarterfinal run in Bogota. A consistent Errani won her first two rounds in straight sets in the tournament before losing her way against Tamara Zidansek in the quarterfinals as she was beaten quite comfortably by the Slovenian.

Despite her recent poor record, one should never forget that clay is Errani’s favourite surface. She is a wily fox, who is extremely hard to beat on the slower clay-courts and Charleston would surely suit her style of play.

McHale v Errani Prediction and Tip

Errani has already proved how good she is on the clay courts. After all, she is a former French Open finalist in singles and a champion in the doubles. The Italian will start as a heavy favourite against McHale in this encounter.

Tip: Errani to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
