Hubert Hurkacz v Dan Evans Head to Head

In their only previous outing, Hurkacz had defeated Evans on the clay court surface of the Rome Masters last year. That matched last three sets.

Hurkacz Makes it Seven in Seven

Not too fond of playing on clay, Hurkacz kick-started the dirt swing with a three-set win over Thomas Fabbiano in the first round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, making it his seventh win in a row on the ATP circuit.

Hurkacz, who had never entered the second round of this competition before this year, came into his first round match on the back of a title win at the Miami Masters and while he was a strong favourite, the Pole needed three sets to get past his opponent.

He won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to make the second round, needing nearly two hours to win his opener.

It was a difference of small margins, with Hurkacz converting three of his 10 break-points while Fabbiano getting two breaks of serve off nine. In fact, at one set all and a game apiece in the third, Fabbiano broke Hurkacz to take a 2-1 lead but the world number 16 came back strongly to retaliate with a break of serve and then took a 5-3 lead with a second one.

Hurkacz will now hope to make it his eighth win in a row when he faces a player who has never had a decent run on clay.

Evans Finally Breaks the Clay Hoodoo

The top-ranked player in Britain, Dan Evans has had one of his best seasons in 2021 but that doesn’t take away from the fact he was coming into this tournament having last won a main draw win on clay in 2017.

In fact, it was in a qualifying match in 2019 he had won his last encounter on clay and when he missed out on two match-points in the second set, it looked like Evans would have to wait that much longer for another such victory.

In the end, Evans won 6-3, 6-7 (11), 6-2 having also struggled in his last few matches, losing a few close encounters coming into this one. Evans broke a four-match losing streak, but more importantly won his first three-setter in five matches to seal his second round berth.

The world number 33 Evans had earlier won his maiden ATP title at the Murray River Open in Melbourne.

Hurkacz v Evans Prediction and Tip

This seems to be a straightforward call to make, with Hurkacz expected to ease into the third round with a win.

Tip: Hurkacz to win: 1/2 (bet365)
