Pablo Carreno Busta v Karen Khachanov Head to Head
There have been four previous matches played between Carreno Busta and Khachanov and the head to head between these players is 2-2. Their most recent meeting came at the 2020 Cincinnati Masters which was played in New York, and Khachanov had won that in straight sets to advance to third round.
There has been one match on clay too, at this very competition, and in 2017, with Carreno Busta having won it in straight sets.

Carreno Busta Edges Out Travaglia
In what turned out to be a controversial first round tie, Carreno Busta was a straight-set winner over Stefano Travaglia, but not before the latter had taken two hours and five minutes of his opponent’s time.
Carreno Busta won 7-5, 7-6 (4) in a match that saw both players get a plethora of breaking opportunities. The Spaniard availed two of those nine chances while himself conceding his serve once in eight opportunities.
Things came to head in the middle of a tense second set too, when Carreno Busta’s coach clapped in the middle of a rally. The two players had a go at each other but in the end, it was Carreno Busta who was able to come away a winner.
Interestingly, it was Carreno Busta’s sixth successive tie-breaker win this season, making him a huge threat in such situations. Can he now get past another difficult opposition to make it to the third round?

Khachanov Scythes Djere in Opener
A much bigger fight was expected when Russia’s Khachanov took on Laslo Djere in their opening round encounter. The Russian, however, came through easily in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-1 to seal his second round berth.
In a match lasting an hour and 19 minutes, Khachanov took advantage of Djere’s substandard serving to break him four times and dropped his own serve just once in the entire match. And even that came early in the opening set when Djere fought back from a break down to level things out at 2-2.
Once Khachanov took a 5-4 lead and then broke Djere as he served to stay in the set, the match turned around comfortably in the Russian’s favour.
Khachanov, a semifinalist at the Great Ocean Road Open, will now hope to emulate his best showing at this tournament, having reached the third round in 2018. Carreno Busta’s form and pedigree make it a difficult proposition for Khachanov.
Carreno Busta v Khachanov Prediction and Tip
Both start out at 10/11, such is the close nature of this contest but we will have to go with Carreno Busta for this one given his recent form and the fact Khachanov has generally found clay tough to tackle.
Tip: Carreno Busta to win: 10/11 (bet365)
