Andrey Rublev v Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head

The world number eight Rublev and the 11th-ranked Bautista Agut have faced off five times before this and the Spaniard has a 3-2 lead. The two had met as recently as the ATP Doha earlier this year, with Bautista Agut winning in straight sets.

Their only match on clay came at the Hamburg Open last year and it was Rublev who had come away a victor in that quarterfinal. The Russian went on to win the title, his second one on clay.

Caruso No Match for Rublev

A bye in the first round for Rublev meant like some of the other top players in this competition, he was also playing in his first clay court match of the season. Rustiness was expected despite starting out as a heavy favourite.

The Russian showed no such sign though as he cruised past Italy’s Salvatore Caruso in straight sets. Needing only an hour and nine minutes, Rublev won 6-3, 6-2 to seal off the win, breaking his opponent three times and in return, saving all the four break-points he himself faced.

Rublev has shown remarkable form since the start of the previous season but unlike his Russian counterpart Daniil Medvedev, his results haven’t been restricted to hard court surfaces alone.

For instance, last season, Rublev ended the year at 17-3 on clay – which includes results from exhibition matches as well. And now having started the way he has here, the Russian will be a difficult opposition to surmount.

Bautista Agut Showing Signs of Being at His Best

After an excellent time on the hard court swing, Bautista Agut looks to have begun the clay court season in continuation of that very good form. Over the first two rounds of this competition, the Spaniard dispatched both his American opponents in a hurry and earned the right to meet Rublev in this one.

He needed an hour and a half against Paul but apart from the start of the second set, where he was broken in the very first game, Bautista Agut barely looked like he was in any trouble.

The world number 11 ran off to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, and then retaliated with a break back in the second to level things off at 2-2. And then at 4-4, under pressure, Bautista Agut broke Paul for one last time before serving it out.

Rublev could prove to be a harder challenge than he did on hard court surfaces too though.

Rublev v Bautista Agut Prediction and Tip

Rublev is 1/2 to win this and 6/5 to do that in straight sets and while we reckon the Russian could do the latter, he is a good shot to win this for sure.

Tip: Rublev to win: 1/2 (bet365)
