Serrano Overcomes the Linette Challenge

19-year-old Serrano, who is known for her defensive prowess, overcame the stiff challenge of Poland’s Magda Linette in her Charleston opener as she somehow managed to beat her in three close sets. In fact, such was the quality of tennis in the match that at one point of time, it was impossible to pick a winner, but it was Serrano, who raised the level of her game just in time to defeat her rival 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to proceed through to the second round.

Despite being a teenager, Serrano has won a lot of fans with her game, which is largely based on her ability to retrieve balls from the baseline. Moreover, she may have participated in only a handful of WTA tournaments in 2021, but she has displayed the kind of maturity that only champions display during their early days on the tour.

What’s more impressive about Serrano is that she has got the game to make a successful transition from the hard courts to the clay courts. While, the young Colombian showed her promise on the hard courts of Monterrey, by making it through to the main draw of the tournament, her real moment of glory arrived in Bogota, where she won her maiden WTA title by beating Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia in three tight sets.

Indeed, Serrano’s game is most suited to the clay courts and her triumph in Bogota was a testament of her pedigree on the surface. Additionally, she also showed to the world that she can find her way, especially when the wind is not blowing in her favor as she came back from a set down to accomplish a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win in the final.

McHale Sends Errani Packing

Serrano’s challenger in Round 2 is the American Christina McHale. McHale, whose ranking has plummeted to 91 in the official WTA rankings, was once ranked as high as No. 24 in the world. Surely, McHale can put up a good show, when she is in form, but that is something, she has been unable to find of late.

The truth of the matter is that McHale’s form has been quite erratic and she has had her share of problems while negotiating her adversaries this season. The American has compiled a pathetic 2-7 win/loss record in 2021 and has looked completely out of sorts, even against the qualifiers.

However, her victory over former French Open finalist Sara Errani in the first round of the ongoing tournament in Charleston came as a huge surprise to his fans. Considering her poor form, McHale wasn’t expected to beat the Italian and that too in such straightforward fashion. But, McHale proved all her critics wrong as she coasted through to a comfortable 7-6, 6-3 win over the former top-10 player on Tuesday.

The win over Errani would have certainly boosted McHale’s confidence and she would definitely play with more authority against Serrano in their round of 16 clash. While McHale’s execution of her game plan was nearly perfect against Errani, it remains to be seen if she can succeed in her tactics against Serrano as well.

Serrano v McHale Prediction and Tip

No surprises here as Serrano starts off a favourite at 8/13 but McHale could spring a surprise, just like she did against Errani in the opening round. Furthermore, Serrano’s all-round game on clay gives her a definitive edge over McHale. Going with a Serrano victory.

Tip: Serrano to win: 8/13 (bet365)
