Pablo Carreno Busta v Casper Ruud Head to Head
There have been two previous matches between these two players and both have won one apiece. Both came on clay, both were three-setters with Carreno Busta winning the first at the Rio Open in 2017 while Ruud making it 1-1 in Kitzbuhel in 2019.

Karen Khachanov is a Masters 1000 title winner and a solid player in his own right but against Carreno Busta, he proved to be bit of a damp squib in their second round match. Carreno Busta routed the 23rd-ranked Russian 6-2, 6-3 to continue his unbeaten record on clay this season, a streak that has now stretched over six matches.
Having begun the Marbella Open last week with back to back straight-set wins too, Carreno Busta had then needed a couple of three-setters against Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Jaume Munar to lift the title there.
And he has begun this tournament like the way he had left that off with victories over Stefano Travaglia and now Khachanov in straight sets.
Carreno Busta needed an hour and 14 minutes, breaking his opponent four times and while he himself faced two break points, and saved both of them. And while the competition can be expected to get tougher from here on, Carreno Busta’s consistent display this season makes him a strong favourite to test some of the best competitors left in this tournament.

Ruud Shock for Schwartzman
A runnerup at the Italian Open last season, having defeated Rafael Nadal on his way, Schwartzman also managed to find himself a place in the semifinal at the following French Open where he then lost to the same player.
A clay court specialist, the Argentine had gone into his second round match against Ruud as a favourite to ease his way into the next round.
Instead Ruud hardly wasted any time in making it two wins in a row, defeating Schwartzman 6-3, 6-3 to advance to round three. He was on court for an hour and seven minutes, faced a total of a mere one break-point – and saved it – and broke his opponent three from the four chances he got.
And this win came on the back of an easy opening round victory over Holger Rune, the 17-year-old and talented Dane.
With that kind of form, can Ruud stall Carreno Busta in his footsteps too?

While Carreno Busta is a favourite, that’s not by much with the Spaniard starting out at 4/5. Ruud himself is at 1/1 which isn’t quite tempting – we would have hoped for better returns there – but we can look at this ending up as a three-setter.
