Gilles Simon v Pablo Andujar Head to Head

There have been five previous meetings between these two players and Andujar leads 3-2. On clay, however, it’s 3-0 in favour of the Spaniard, with Simon having won their most recent outing at the 2019 Tokyo Open on hard court.

Veteran Simon in a Slump

36-year-old Simon has won just two of the only six matches he has featured in this year and that leads to questions about his chances in this opening round match.

He looked to have made a neat start to the year when Simon defeated Elias Ymer in his opener at the Murray River Open but a second round defeat there to Jeremy Chardy and back to back opening losses at the Australian Open and Montpellier Open have led to multiple issues for him.

While he did finally break his losing streak at the Cagliari Open in the first week of this month, stunning the overwhelming favourite Stefano Travaglia, another crushing loss followed in the second round leaving him in a slump.

Add this to the fact Simon last won a main draw match on clay before his Cagliari appearance way back in 2019 – it came in the first round of the French Open that season – and one would probably have a fair idea about how difficult things could get for the Frenchman.

Andujar Himself in a Spot of Bother

35-year-old Andujar has played a few matches on clay this season but after having made a solid start on this surface he looks to have fallen by the wayside. And that’s not counting his form issues on hard court surfaces this year.

Having begun the year with back to back defeats at the Delray Beach Open and the Great Ocean Road Open to players who did not go into those matches as favourites, Andujar then managed a first round win at the Australian Open only to fall to Filip Krajinovic in the second.

A change in environment seemed to have helped the Spanish veteran with back to back victories at the Buenos Aires Open but that has been followed by three defeats. Andujar fell to Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals at that tournament, and then lost his openers in Santiago and Monte-Carlo to Daniel Galan and Alexei Popyrin.

He will now be looking to stall his three-match losing streak and fortunately for him, he has an opponent who is in a similar boat as him.

Simon v Andujar Prediction and Tip

Another tough encounter to call but Andujar’s overall record and experience on clay makes him our favourite to edge this contest despite his losing streak.

Tip: Andujar to win: 1/2 (bet365)
