Nao Hibino v Ana Bogdan Head to Head

The only times these two players have gone up against each other have been in qualifying events for main draws of tournaments – it started with the Japan Open of 2014 where Bogdan won in three sets before Hibino needed a final set tie-breaker to get past Hibino in Indian Wells.

Hibino Better Off After Charleston Turnaround

Coming into the Charleston Open two weeks, Hibino’s struggles had been well chronicled. Since winning her first round match at the Australian Open – incidentally her first match of the season – Hibino had gone six matches without a victory.

This included five successive losses in the first round of tournaments that had a first round loss at the first of the competitions held in Charleston.

It was finally in the second of those tournaments that Hibino managed to break that streak, defeating fellow Japanese player Misaki Doi in the first round of that Charleston Open. And she followed it up with a second round victory over Francesca Di Lorenzo before falling to Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinal.

She now starts off with some confidence injected in her play and against a player who hasn’t played on clay so far this season.

Bogdan Falls Outside Top 100

Having begun the year ranked 92nd in the world, Bogdan’s shoddy form has seen her fall to outside the top 100 on the WTA charts. Which isn’t too surprising given that all of this year, Bogdan has won just two main draw matches.

The first of those came at the Yarra Valley Classic and Bogdan then managed to surprise Anastasija Sevastova in the first round of the Phillip Island Trophy. Since then, she did win a couple of qualifiers to take her to the main draw of the WTA Dubai but back to back first round losses there means she now has not much of a momentum coming into this.

Add that to the fact the Romanian hasn’t played on clay this year and won just two matches on it last year and we could be looking at an interesting match-up in this opener in Istanbul.

Hibino v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

Bogdan, being more of a clay-courter is a 4/11 favourite to win this but Hibino’s time on clay this year keeps her in the contest. Going for a games handicap in this one.

Tip: Games Handicap Hibino +4.5: 5/6 (bet365)
