Kerber Makes Underwhelming Start

After struggling through most part of the 2020 season, Kerber hasn’t made the best of starts to 2021 either, with four wins and five defeats under her belt. And she now moves on to clay where her record over the past three seasons hasn’t been too great either.

Since making it to the quarterfinal of the 2019 French Open, Kerber has played only two matches on clay and she has lost both of them. Those matches came at the Italian Open and the French Open last year.

And it’s not just clay which is an issue.

Kerber had made it to the quarterfinal at the Grampians Trophy earlier this season, in what was her first competition of the year. Since then, Kerber has won just two of the next seven matches she’s played. Losses have come thick and fast and the likes of Maria Sakkari, Bernarda Pera, Anett Kontaveit, Caroline Garcia and  Victoria Azarenka have all beaten her in the process.

Can the German make a better switch to clay as one would expect?

Gorgodze Hopes to Make an Impression

There is a reason why Gorgotze is ranked as low as she is right now, and that’s to do with her continuing struggling showing that saw her lose seven matches in a row at the beginning of this season. Making the situation worse was the fact all these defeats came either on the ITF circuit or the qualifying rounds of a WTA competition.

It’s only more recently, at the Bellinzona ITF competition has Gorgodze shown some signs of a turnaround as she won four in a row to enter the semifinal of that tournament.

A second round withdrawal at the following ITF tournament because of injury and a second round qualifying loss here added further question-marks over her performance but she has now got herself a break.

Gorgotze has made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, and that should help her gain valuable WTA ranking points. As far as getting past Kerber in the opener here is concerned, it seems a highly unlikely proposition.

Kerber v Gorgodze Prediction and Tip

Kerber’s poor form notwithstanding, backing her to win this one in straight sets for which the German starts at 4/5.

Tip: Kerber to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
