Denis Shapovalov v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between these two players and Shapovalov has won them all. While at Wimbledon 2018, Shapovalov was stretched to a four-setter, that was followed by back to back straight-set victories for the Canadian.

Their last meeting came earlier this year in the ATP Dubai quarterfinals where Shapovalov won 7-5, 6-4. This will be their first match on clay.

Shapovalov Steady But Needs Better Results

A world number 10 not so long ago, Shapovalov would have wanted to do a lot better than his record of seven wins and six defeats this season. And it’s not so much the number of early defeats that matter but the opponents he lost to.

In Doha, for instance, the Canadian went down to Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. This was followed by a semifinal defeat at Dubai to Lloyd Harris while Hubert Hurkacz sent him packing from the Miami Masters – all the kind of opponents he would have fancied wins against at his best.

But Shapovalov doesn’t look to be at his best and had it not been for these tweaked rankings, he would have even fallen to lower than his current ranking of 14th in the world.

And he now switches over to clay for the first time this season, a surface he has traditionally on. Can he start off well?

Chardy Gets Past Basilashvili

Nikoloz Basilashvili has had a strange kind of season given how much of a swing he has shown between his best and not-so-good, and Chardy looked to have taken full advantage of that in their first round match here.

While Basilashvili put up a fight that took the match to two hours, it was the 34-year-old Chardy who came through in three sets in the end, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to clinch the second round place.

An early couple of breaks in the first set for Chardy meant even when Basilashvili broke back once, the Frenchman had the buffer to see it through to the end of the set. The second set went to serve all the way till the seventh game but a crucial break in the eighth brought Basilashvili back in the encounter as he levelled the match.

The third set saw Chardy drop his serve in the first game but then broke back the very next. The set went on serve till the seventh game again, but this time it was Chardy who broke in the eighth and then served it out to clinch his second round berth.

Shapovalov v Chardy Prediction and Tip

Shapovalov will be playing his first match on clay which makes it a slightly more even contest than the 2/5 odds that are on offer for his win.

Tip: Shapovalov to win AND Over 20.5 games in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
