Petra Kvitova v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

There have been four previous matches between Kvitova and Sakkari before this and the scoreline is 2-2 on head to head.

Their most recent match came at the 2020 Australian Open where Kvitova won in three sets, while in their only meeting on clay, it was Sakkari who came through when she led 4-0 in the final set of Italian Open in 2019 before the Czech had to retire because of injury.

Kvitova Shrugs Off Brady Challenge

In her own words, Kvitova admitted first round challenges didn’t come harder than what she had in this opener at Stuttgart. The defending champion, however, came through unscathed as she registered a straight-set win to make it to the second round of the competition.

Needing an hour and 34 minutes, Kvitova won 6-4, 6-3 against the in-form American.

And despite it being a straight-set win for the Czech, it turned out to be a hard-fought and a cagey affair that saw just two breaks of serve – one in each set – as opposed to none against her. Kvitova saved all three of the break-points she faced, missed three match-points before converting the fourth.

Kvitova will now hope things don’t do a repeat of her last clay court tournament in Charleston where the Czech was bundled out in the second round by Danka Kovinic. Because this time around, she will be facing a way tougher opponent than Kovinic.

Sakkari Continues from Where She Left off

A semifinalist at the Miami Open, Sakkari did not waste too much switching to clay and winning her opening round match here in Stuttgart with ease.

Sakkari ran past Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 6-2 in a mere hour and seven minutes to set up a second round meeting with Kvitova.

The match began with the two trading breaks of serves in the first two games, but Sakkari broke again in the third and fifth game to go 4-1 up. Another two breaks of serves then allowed Sakkari to take control as she then served out for the set.

Things got a lot easier in the second set as Sakkari broke Petkovic twice without return and then converted the first match-point she got to come through in straight sets.

Sakkari was playing in her first clay court match since her third round exit at the French Open last year and looked like she had never been away. Now comes her real test though.

Kvitova v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, it’s Kvitova who is a favourite at 4/6 while Sakkari begins at 11/10. A keen tussle looks to be in the offing which could go either way in a three-set match.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
