Zapata Miralles Sends Fognini Packing
The second round match did not even see through to a completion with Zapata Miralles benefitting from a shock win over Fabio Fognini who was defaulted from the encounter due to allegations of verbal abuse.
Zapata Miralles was leading 6-0, 4-4 against Italy’s Fognini when he was awarded a win after the chair umpire was informed by a line judge that there had been swearing involved. And while Fognini was strongly upset – he broke his racquet and attempted to smash it to to the net post after the verdict – Zapata Miralles wouldn’t have minded the result one bit.
Because for someone who has never been better than 142nd in the world before this, this entry into the third round at the Barcelona Open would be a godsend.
A clay court specialist at the lower circuit, this will be his chance to cause a few more ripples on the ATP tour but to be able to do that he would need to overcome a player ranked more than 130 places ahead of him.
Tough match but he will have nothing to lose here.
