Karolina Pliskova v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

There have been six previous matches played between these two players and both have won three apiece. In their most recent outing at the 2020 French Open, Ostapenko stunned Pliskova in the second round in straight sets.

They had met at this very tournament in 2018 and it was Pliskova who had won that encounter but not before Ostapenko had taken the Czech to a third set.

Pliskova Continues to Struggle

Another match, another struggle. Pliskova’s recent tennis career has been littered with some really underwhelming performances and it was no different in her opener at the Stuttgart Open.

Playing the 137th-ranked Tamara Korpatsch, Pliskova was on court for two hours and 19 minutes to get past Korpatsch, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to edge past her opponent.

There wasn’t too much to choose between the two players, with both serving similar first serve stats and it was only in the third set that Pliskova started to get away from her unheralded opponent. Two breaks of serves got her to a 5-1 lead and while she dropped her service in the seventh game and then missed a match-point in the eighth, Pliskova completed the win off her second match-point on her own serve.

This result follows Pliskova’s tepid display this season where she has managed just a third round at the Australian Open as her best performance of the year.

Now she faces an opponent against whom she hasn’t done too well in the past.

Ostapenko Wheels Past Voegle

It was a straight-set win for Ostapenko in what was her first match on clay for the season. She defeated Stefanie Voegele 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 36 minutes to take her appointed place in the second round.

The match saw a plethora of breaks, with Voegele starting off with an early break and Ostapenko levelling at 2-2. Four breaks of serves followed to take the score to 4-4 before the Latvian player held on to her own serve before completing the set with a seventh break of serve of the set.

The players were a lot more consistent on their serve in the third, with Voegele again starting off with a break but losing her serve in the fourth game. Ostapenko missed three chances to make it two breaks in a row, but then broke her Swiss opponent as she served at 5-6 to stay in the match.

Ostapenko had earlier entered the tournament on the back of a middling 7-6 win-loss record.

Pliskova v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

It’s Pliskova who is a favourite in this one but only just. Bet365, for instance have pegged Ostapenko at 1/1 for this one and we believe those are fair odds. However, the world number nine, at 4/5 will be our favourite for this one.

Tip: Pliskova to win: 4/5 (bet365)
