Ash Barty v Aryna Sabalenka Head to Head

Inclusive of a Fed Cup encounter that took place in 2019, these two have played each other six times and won three times apiece. Their most recent outing came at the 2021 Miami Open and Barty had won that quarterfinal in three sets.

None of their previous meetings have come on clay.

Barty Stretched Again, Wins Again

For the second match in a row, Barty lost the first set of her encounter only to fight back and carve out a comeback victory. Only this time, matters got so serious Barty was on the verge of a defeat.

Down a set, Barty looked to have gained some traction in the encounter when she broke her quarterfinal opponent Elina Svitolina early in the second to take a 3-0 lead. She, however, dropped her serve twice in a row to fall 4-5 behind with Svitolina serving for the match.

Barty broke back to 15, then took the match to a tie-breaker before coming back from 2-4 down to win it. And the champion she is, Barty then broke Svitolina twice in the final set to net the match in three.

This came on the back of a three-set win for Barty in the previous round over Karolina Pliskova, also from a set down. Can she now win her third title of the season?

Sabalenka Routs Halep

It wasn’t quite a result one would have expected, especially given the performance of the two players in question on clay. Simona Halep has performed exceedingly well on clay while Sabalenka is a decent player on the surface but typically more tuned in on hard court surfaces.

Which is why a 6-3, 6-2 rout of Halep in an hour and eight minutes with Sabalenka managing to break the Romanian thrice while herself saving all three break-points she faced in the match was a surprise.

And it was a pleasant one for Sabalenka, who had begun the season with a title win at the Abu Dhabi Open, but then followed it up with performances that would have made her want to do a lot better. A fourth round loss at the Australian Open and a quarterfinal defeat in Miami could have been a lot better had it not been for those defeats to the likes of Serena Williams and Barty herself.

Question now is if Sabalenka has found herself a solution to get past the world number one.

Barty v Sabalenka Prediction and Tip

While Barty is a favourite at 8/11, it would be very difficult to discount Sabalenka in her current form. We had expected her to fall to Halep and she surpassed all our expectations but can she do it the second time in a row? Backing Barty’s tenacity here.

Tip: Barty to win: 8/11 (bet365)
