Casper Ruud v Pablo Cuevas Head to Head

There has been only previous outing between these two players and that had come in the 2019 Kitzbuhel Open where Ruud had won won 6-3, 7-6 (4) to enter the semifinal of that tournament.

Ruud Resumes after Monte Carlo Semis

Ruud has three ATP tournament final appearances, of which he has won one title. All three of them came on clay.

And it could well have been a fourth when Ruud made it all the way to the semifinals at the Monte Carlo Masters, before Andrey Rublev got the better of him. However, wins over Holger Rune, Diego Schwartzman, Pablo Carreno Busta and Fabio Fognini in that tournament would have been a huge confidence-booster for the Norwegian player.

Especially coming into this rest of the clay court swing which will see the Madrid Masters and French Open coming up next.

The world number 24 could even break into his career-best top 20 ranking with a couple of decent performances this and the next week but for starters he needs to overcome a player who hasn’t had the best of starts to the season.

Cuevas Tames Tennys

Tennys Sandgren was a 4/6 favourite in his opening round encounter against Cuevas and while he bounced back well after the first set loss, the match went well for the Uruguayan in the end.

Having gotten bagelled in the second set, Cuevas overcame an early exchange of service breaks to rattle off five games in a row and completed a 7-6 (4), 0-6, 6-1 win in an hour and 48 minutes.

Interestingly, Cuevas was playing his first match on clay since losing back to back matches at the French Open and Sardinia Open last season, but with an above-average start to the season otherwise. He had made the third round at the Great Ocean Road Open and won his opener at the Australian Open.

And while against Ruud things could get really difficult, Cuevas would be quietly confident following the kind of start to his season.

Ruud v Cuevas Prediction and Tip

Ruud is 2/9 to scoop this one and 4/7 to win it in straight sets but we could look at this being a tough encounter. Might see a bit of a fight from Cuevas before Ruud wins it.

Tip: Ruud to win AND Over 19.5 games in match: 5/4 (bet365)
