Garbine Muguruza v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

Four previous matches between Muguruza and Stephens have been split 2-2. Two of these matches came on clay and both players won one apiece, with Muguruza scooping their latest encounter in 2020 when they faced off in Rome.

Interestingly, none of their previous meetings went into a third set.

Muguruza Back from Injury

It’s been a year to remember for Muguruza who has already reached three WTA finals and won one title. And had it not been for a knee injury in her match against Yulia Putintseva at Charleston Open, she might have gone way deeper than just third round in that tournament as well.

Muguruza had shown signs of a resurrection last year too but the pandemic-related break had cut her season short much like most of the other players. The Spaniard had managed a final at the Australian Open 2020, and was a semifinalist in Rome but what she had done this year has topped that easily.

Victories over Sofia Kenin, Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari, Iga Swiatek and Elise Mertens at different times have already punctuated her performances this season and what she now would look for is a steady start on clay after her injury earlier this month.

It won’t be easy given her opponent did show her own signs of sparks on clay.

Stephens Makes Charleston Quarterfinal

There have been questions flying at Stephens as her run of poor form has continued into a third year now. The American, before coming into the clay court swing, had won a mere one match and lost five including a four-match losing streak to kick the season off.

Where she looked to have turned things around is at the Charleston Open where the American won three matches in a row to make it as far as the quarterfinals.

For starters those were all straight-set wins. Secondly, this was her first instance of three successive wins since the 2019 French Open, where she had reached the last-eight.

Very importantly, the wins in Charleston also included one against Madison Keys, thereby underlining some sort of a turnaround. Can she now stand up and challenge Muguruza in this opener?

Muguruza v Stephens Prediction and Tip

While Muguruza is a whopping 1/6 to win this, there are always some doubts when a player returns from an injury. Which is why a games handicap market looks like a good bet.

Tip: Games Handicap Stephens +5.5: 10/11 (bet365)
