Victoria Azarenka v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2018 Wimbledon where Azarenka defeated Alexandrova in straight sets in first round.

Two-Time Finalist Azarenka Starts Clay Campaign

A title winner at the Cincinnati Open last season and having made it to the final at the US Open, Azarenka has continued to sparkle without reaching any more WTA finals.

Shifting from hard court to clay in 2020, the Belarusian made it to the quarterfinal at the Italian Open while she was a semifinalist at the WTA Doha earlier this season. Twice now, however, Azarenka has had to retire from matches because of injuries and that would be bigger worry.

At the Grampians Trophy earlier this season, Azarenka suffered a lumbar spine related problem which ended with a walkover for Anett Kontaveit before she withdrew from her match against Garbine Muguruza in Doha. This time around it was a back problem.

She returned to tennis at the Miami Open but fell to Ash Barty in fourth round and now switches over to clay against a Stuttgart Open quarterfinalist.

Alexandrova Coming off Stuttgart Quarterfinal

While she isn’t quite well-known for her performances on clay, Alexandrova comes into this competition having tuned up nicely with a couple of wins at the Stuttgart Open last week.

In her first round match in that competition, she was a second-favourite against Karolina Muchova and looked like had a struggle on her hands when she lost the first set. Alexandrova went on to come back and seal the match in three.

And following that win, Alexandrova went on to shock Belinda Bencic in the second round before going down to Simona Halep.

By making it to the main draw here, this is already Alexandrova’s best showing in Madrid, but the question now is whether she can win her first main draw match in a WTA 1000 clay event. Her opponent will make it doubly difficult for her.

Azarenka v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip

Azarenka is a favourite at 8/13 but what makes this a more evenly-contested encounter is her lack of match practice on this surface. Alexandrova should be able to snatch a set here.

Tip: Alexandova to win a set – Yes: 4/7 (bet365)
