Naomi Osaka v Misaki Doi Head to Head

There have been two previous matches played between these two players and Osaka has won both times. The latest of those two matches came at the 2020 US Open where Doi managed to push her opponent to a third set before Osaka came through and made it to second round.

Osaka in First Clay Match Since 2019

For a player who has been on a roll since the 2020 Australian Open, Osaka has surprisingly not played a single match on clay in nearly two years.

Her last such encounter came at the 2019 French Open where the world number two crashed out in the third round and the proceeded to miss the entire clay swing in 2020 because of fitness-related issues.

What’s been surprising is Osaka hasn’t played a single match on clay this season. In fact, Osaka has featured in just three competitions all year, making it to the semifinal at the Gippsland Trophy, winning the title at the Australian Open and then marching into the quarterfinals in Miami where she fell to Maria Sakkari.

That defeat to Sakkari, incidentally, was her first loss on the WTA tour since her 2020 Australian Open loss to Cori Gauff.

For most part of these last 15 months, Osaka has looked invincible but given her middling form and lack of matches on clay, it would be interesting to see how she goes in this tournament.

Qualifier Doi Hoping to Put up a Fight

It’s bit of a mismatch with one player ranked second in the world and leading the points tally on the WTA charts and the other, Doi, ranked 79th in the world and struggling to even win a couple of matches in a row.

In fact it was in Hiroshima in 2019 that Doi last won a couple of successive encounters, making it all the way to the final of that tournament. That very season, Doi also won her third – and the last – WTA title which incidentally came on the clay courts of Bastad.

What that seems to imply is Doi can compete well on clay and that was on display during the qualifiers as well.

She started off with a straight-set victory over the 233rd-ranked Eva Guerrero Alvarez, which was on expected lines but then starting out at odds of 5/2 against Danka Kovinic, Doi shocked her opponent 6-2, 6-4 to make it to the main draw.

Osaka will be a different kettle of fish but can Doi put up a fight?

Osaka v Doi Prediction and Tip

Doi is a distant second here, starting out at 7/1 but the advantage she does have is Osaka hasn’t played a lot of clay court tennis in recent times. A games handicap market sounds like an option.

Tip: Games Handicap Doi +6.5: 8/11 (bet365)
