Anett Kontaveit v Nina Stojanovic Head to Head
The pair have met once before when they were playing for their countries in the Fed Cup in 2017, Kontaveit winning their Group match in straight sets.
Consistent Kontaveit Shared Melbourne Title
Earlier this year, Kontaveit shared the Grampians Trophy in Melbourne with Ann Li of the USA, after their final was cancelled. That, though, statistically counts as her second career tournament victory, more than three years after her first, on grass, at the Rosmalen Championships in the Netherlands.
She had been in four finals since, losing them all, two of them on clay – the Stuttgart Open in 2019, and the Sardinia Open after the resumption of the sport last year.
Since Kontaveit’s exploits in Melbourne, Kontaveit has performed consistently, even if she has not pulled up any trees, reaching the third round in Melbourne. Doha and then Dubai.
Her first clay court event of the year was last week in Stuttgart, where she again reached the third round, picking up a big win over Sofia Kenin along the way.
However, Kontaveit’s run was then ended by Arnya Sabalenka in three sets.

Stojanovic Back in the Top 100 Again
Having briefly dropped out of the world top 100 towards the end of last year, Stojanovic has fought het way back up the rankings with a series of good performances, most notably in Miami, where she came through qualifying and then reached the third round only to have to pull out of match with Naomi Osaka because of injury.
Earlier in the year she reached the second round of the Australian Open, her best ever showing in a Grand Slam, before she was heavily beaten by Serena Williams.
Since Miami, Stojanovic lost both her matches laying for Serbia against Canada in a Billie-Jean King Group Relegation play-off.
She was forced to enter the qualifying competition in Madrid, and had real battle to beat the Italian Jasmine Paolina in her first match, defeating the world 103 after a tense, three set battle.
The Serb found her second round opponent, Ana Konjuh of Croatia, more to her liking, and brushed aside her challenge in straight sets.
Kontaveit v Stojanovic Prediction and Tip
Kontaveit is a consistent performer on the WTA tour, and rarely gets knocked out in the first round of tournaments, even though she does not challenge for titles as often as she might like. She should keep that record going in Madrid.
Tip: Kontaveit to win: 8/11 (bet365)
