Bencic Brings Down Mladenovic

There has been a worry about Bencic’s recent form which has seen her struggle to win too many of the matches she has played over the last couple of months. Since her appearance in the final of Adelaide International in February, Bencic had lost five of her eight matches before this competition.

Which is why going up against Kristina Mladenovic in her opener was never going to be a straightforward encounter and despite the gulf in the rankings of the two players, Bencic was only 3/5 to win it.

She came through in straight sets in the end, but needed an hour and 20 minutes and with Bencic going through bit of a test in the opening set. The Swiss player broke Mladenovic to love in the third game but retaliated with a hard-fought break back in the very next game.

Another break followed for Bencic, who then held on and served it out at 5-4.

And Bencic raced away to an easy win the second set with a couple of breaks of serve and will now face a second qualifier in a row.

Pera Stuns Martic in Opener

It wasn’t the easiest path to the main draw of this competition for Pera, who needed back to back three-set wins in the qualifiers. She had first overcome Aliona Bolsova and then edged out Polona Hercog in the second.

However, up against the 24th-ranked Petra Martic, Pera wasted no time in getting through in an hour and 11 minutes to clinch a rare second round berth.

Having come into this tournament on the back of five successive tournaments without a main draw victory, Pera helped herself to three break-points in the entire match and won each of them. As compared to that, there were six breaking chances for Martic but Pera saved each of them to come away a winner.

She now takes on an opponent who has had a poor season of her and Pera would think she has an outside chance to get past Bencic.

Bencic v Pera Prediction and Tip

Bencic is a favourite at 4/6 but given her recent form and with Pera having come fighting into the second round, we could see a tough one. A three-setter can be expected.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
