Karen Khachanov v Kei Nishikori Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and both have won two apiece. Khachanov won their most recent match in the Vienna Open of 2018, registering a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The duo has never played on clay before this.

Khachanov Struggling on Clay

After making a solid start to the season with a semifinal appearance at the Great Ocean Road Open, Khachanov’s form has shown signs of plumetting. And with his overall record on clay not quite the best, it has been an even steeper struggle on it.

Khachanov did start off with a first round win at the Monte-Carlo Masters, and against a tricky opponent in the form of Laslo Djere, but since then things have gone a tad pear-shaped for him.

A second round loss to Pablo Carren0-Busta followed soon after and he then fell in the opener at the Barcelona Open competition which followed soon after. That he lost to a player who had gone into the game at 7/3 odds to win was an even bigger shock as Cameron Norrie registered a three-set victory.

He now starts off against a player ranked a few notches below him but one who knows his way around clay court surfaces.

Nishikori Starts Clay on a Positive Note

While a third round defeat in Barcelona doesn’t make for an extraordinary reading, it must be quickly added Nishikori’s loss came at the hands of Rafael Nadal. And that was after he took a set off the Spaniard despite getting bagelled in the first.

What would have made it better feeling for Nishikori is the wins that preceded that Nadal defeat.

He started off with a victory over Guido Pella, a clay-court specialist himself and then overcame Cristian Garin in the second round. The Japanese player had started off 6/4 to edge it and he did that in three sets.

The Barcelona result would have come as a bit of a relief for the Japanese player, who had a 2-4 win-loss record on clay last season. Can he now get the better of his higher-ranked opponent?

Khachanov v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

There isn’t much to choose between these two players but given Nishikori’s stats on clay and his recent performances we will have to back him to win this.
