Dominik Koepfer v Reilly Opelka Head to Head
The pair have met once before in the second round of the US Open in 2019, Koepfer winning in three sets.

Can Koepfer Find Some Form in Madrid?
Unlike Opelka, Koepfer has played a lot of tennis in 2021 already, with his best result coming in Acapulco, where he was a surprise semi-finalist in Acapulco, with his run there including a win over Milos Raonic, before he was beaten by compatriot Alexander Zverev.
Switching to clay, he has found success harder to come by. He began in Monte Carlo, where he had to qualify, doing so successfully, only to lose to Marco Cecchinato in the first round.
He suffered another first round defeat in Barcelona at the hands of Corentin Moutet of France, before arresting that trend with a hard fought three set victory over the German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber in Munich.
However, he then lost to compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff in the next round, the match again going to three sets.

Opelka’s First Clay Court Tournament of 2021
Opelka is playing in his first clay court event of 2021, and making his season debut on European soil. However, since reaching the second round of the Australian Open, he has been in poor form, losing his next four matches.
He has not played since Miami, where he was beaten by the Australian Alexei Popyrin in straight sets in the first round.
Clay, though, does not suit his game, because it robs his serve, one of the fastest on tour, of much of its potency. The only previous time he played in Madrid, he reached the second round and he will do well to emulate that feat this time.
Koepfer v Opelka Prediction and Tip
Although Koepfer is not in the best of form himself, he will start the favourite for this match against a man playing his first clay court event of the year, and whose game is not suited to the surface. The German won the previous match between the pair, and should make it two out of two.
