Brady Dazzles in Ostapenko Ouster

Going into her second round match against Jelena Ostapenko, the former French Open champion, there was nothing to choose between the two as far as the odds were concerned. While Brady was 5/6 to edge the contest, Ostapenko began at 10/11.

The match turned out a sharp contrast to what those odds had suggested though.

Brady, who had earlier sent fellow American Venus Williams packing in her opening round match, dropped a mere three games in the dispatching of Ostapenko. In a match lasting an hour and seven minutes, Brady broke her opponent four times in the encounter while easily staving off all the three break-points she faced and completed a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

This followed a bruising opening loss at the hands of Petra Kvitova at the Stuttgart Open, reminding the American how difficult it could become to translate her performances on hard court on to clay.

And yet, here we are, in the third round as Brady starts a favourite to get past her opponent.

Pavlyuchenkova Stuns Pliskova

In a way it was a stunning second round win for Pavlyuchenkova over Karolina Pliskova given the difference in their rankings – she is 41st in the world and struggling while her opponent is a world number nine.

However, in some ways it wasn’t very surprising. Pliskova’s form has dipped drastically in recent times and while she did surprise a few and gave indications of a turnaround in her own first round win over Cori Gauff, Pavlyuchenkova’s 6-0, 7-5 rout is only another chapter in Pliskova’s horror run.

What’s interesting to note is Pavlyuchenkova herself been far from her best. After carving out a shock win over Madison Keys in her opener, another win here would have given only her second instance of back to back victories this season.

And that Pavlyuchenkova managed to do that in an hour and 16 minutes against a former world number one speaks volumes about a turnaround.

Brady would be a different kettle of fish though despite her own clay court issues. She is in rhythm and displayed a kind of game in her previous win which points to a tough one for Pavlyuchenkova.

Brady v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

This might become a difficult one to predict given Brady’s general aversion to clay but good form and Pavlyuchenkova showing signs of a turnaround for the season. Going with the American for this one.
